The Whatcom Literacy Council (WLC) is dedicated to increasing literacy skills for adults in Whatcom County.
Through customized, individual tutoring, our students learn critical skills needed to become self–sufficient.
WLC is accredited by ProLiteracy America, the largest adult literacy organization in the United States.
The Whatcom Literacy Council is a nonprofit organization, funded through its own efforts and with the support of local businesses, organizations and individuals.
All WLC services for students are provided free of charge.

For the many immigrants and refugees now residing in Whatcom County that lack basic English-speaking skills. Without reading, writing, and speaking skills, surviving and prospering in today’s world is enormously difficult
For continued volunteer support and financial support in order to provide FREE tutoring to those who lack basic English speaking skills
For boldness for those need help in this area, that they would come forward to partner with the WLC in order to become literate in English.
Tutoring is an immensely rewarding experience. If you can read, you can tutor. The Council provides a simple, 12-hour tutor training program--a tested and proven method of teaching others to read.
To learn more about becoming a tutor, attend a volunteer tutor orientation. Orientations are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 6pm at Bellingham Public Library Meeting Room, Grand & Central.
For more information on becoming a WLC tutor, email staff@whatcomliteracy.org or call 647-3264.
- Bellingham Public Schools
Bellingham residents recognize the value of an excellent education. They have regularly supported school levies and bonds.
Many avenues for community and parent participation are available. Broad-based participation is encouraged. Many parents and community members serve as volunteers in the schools and help in instructional and clerical tasks.
School site councils provide opportunities for involvement in decision-making at the school level. Citizens serve on committees to study special district needs and to provide suggestions and make recommendations to the school administration.
