The church, among many things, is called to be in but not of the world. In but not of. It is a simple phrase but a massively difficult task. The constant temptation to either assimilate into our culture, or completely withdraw, is extreme and our success often times very questionable. The call to be in but not of the world is a call to exile. It is an expression of the identity of the church, the people of God, as exilic. We are longing for another homeland. We desire a better city. We look forward to a different Kingdom and the reign of Jesus our King. These desires were also shared by many of the Old Testament prophets, and perhaps none more than Daniel. he was carried off into literal exile, threatened with persecution and wooed by pleasure to bow a knee to the gods of his captor's kingdom. But he never bowed. He never compromised. He lived and exilic life. But what we learn from Daniel is not primarily to be like Daniel but to have faith in Daniel's God, our God. We believe, that the same God that preserved Daniel in his exile will preserve us as well. We look to the book of Daniel to see not just how to live an exilic life, but more importantly, to see and to worship the one true perfect exile, Jesus Christ, who leaps from the pages of the book of Daniel and by His mercy and grace strengthens us and gives us hope for our exile.
